THE MOST USEFUL ETHIOPIA TRAVEL TIPS Part 1: Phone, Internet, Cheap Flights, Customs Part22/27/2019 It's also 220 volts so remember that. I fried a device when I was out there. all right so for power it's this style, two prong round. this converter I really like, it's got two USB chargers, they're like both one amp and you can see that I got a surge protector here just for convenience but I don't actually carry it around with me. I brought it to my first first leg of my trip. if you have something like this where it plugs on different sides it's just as useful. this little piece I would attach to the power splitter okay so let's talk about customs now so it's fairly well known that Ethiopian customs is fairly strict. if you're bringing two laptops or two computers, you're likely gonna get taxed on one of them you can probably bring in two cameras and two phones but the laptop thing is kind of iffy.
Funny enough, when I got into Ethiopia I didn't get checked by customs so it's hit and miss. okay so let's talk about flights specifically cheap flights. Now you pretty much have to fly into Ethiopian Airlines if you want to take cheap flights locally because by flying into Ethiopian Airlines you automatically get a 30% discount or more on any local flights within Ethiopia so you actually won't see this deal on their website. You have to go into an Ethiopian Airlines office and make all your bookings but show your boarding pass your ticket into the country and they'll give you that discount. once again if you want to make these bookings, show up to the Ethiopian Airlines office early because line ups can get long and service is pretty slow. so just an example on how cheap a flight can be, I flew from Addis Ababa to Lalibela for only $30 one-way and you definitely want to fly there because the area's really mountainous and taking a bus, I think it'd be impossible sometimes. Even taking a Bajaj / tuk-tuk from Lalibela to the Lalibela airport was a really rough ride as for Ethiopian Airlines it's kind of hit or miss. internationally, Ethiopian Airlines is really nice but locally, kind of a mess. so here's one incident so I was leaving me'kele after doing a visit to the denakil desert. I showed up to the airport maybe about 45 minutes before I was supposed to take off and the airplane already took off, like just they just left according to the staff at the front. so I'm here in me'kele airport and I missed the flight about three hours ago. I showed up about an hour early but the flight took off half an hour earlier than usual and when I showed up, I was actually waiting in the line with no agents working so they were kind of really useless. they told me to just like show back up in the line like an hour later which I did and there was a humongous line, just like fighting for flights, total chaos. fortunately I was able to call head office, rearrange my flights. my flight was done pretty cheap, I was able to change it for 15 bucks and so I take off tomorrow. It was a nightmare trying to re-book. everyone's just bombarding the counter in fact just the local counter it was kind of a mess. People aren't really lining up and it's just like a crowd gathering around the counter funny enough I booked for a flight the next day and the flight was delayed for an hour and a half. okay so now it's ten minutes before my flight you can see it's pretty packed here in the boarding area they haven't boarded the flight yet things are running slow I'm gonna take a wild guess and I'm gonna guess that yesterday my tickets were given away to people on the waiting list. You see the time is 3:05 which is 9:05 a.m. in western time and now we're finally boarding to going on to Ethiopian Airlines so it's boarding late and security only stopped ten minutes ago, so they were still letting people in which I don't understand why I didn't get on to the plane yesterday when I was an hour early. I never get tired of boarding a plane on the tarmac though. so another good thing to note on Ethiopia Airlines is got to get the earphone converter. Just get one on Ali Express or eBay so you can convert your headphones to the dual plug. so my recommendation just show up two hours before a flight no matter what.
